The Chicago PMI fell to 40.2% in January, matching the lowest level since Nov 1982. The weakness is consistent with what was seen in the Philadelphia Fed region and bodes poorly for tomorrow's NAPM release. The prices paid index rose to 62.9% as new orders fell to 41.2% and production fell a large 10 points to 40.8%. The bad news continues for the manufacturing sector which will lag the stability and turnaround in the broader economy. ---
