Can you explain the thought process that results in this conclusion?

Simple. A sizeable minority in the US views an unborn child as being a human life that deserves legal protection and having human rights. If an unborn child is seen as a person in the same way as a newborn is then killing it would be murder.

Stictly speaking murder might be an inaccurate word because there is a legal definition of murder. In some sense if it is legal to kill people it is not murder. Then again few would object to a statement that Hitler or Stalin "murdered millions", even if it was legal at the time and even if they did not do it personally.
