Things where mostly pretty peaceful for the US in between WWI and WWII. We cut our military in size and reduced its readiness. We paid the price early in WWII. We paid a similar price early in Korea. Now it would take longer to rebuild if we had to and we might have less time to respond should a new threat or crisis arrises. I'm not saying we should be paranoid, just prepared.

Tim,

Things were not all that peaceful.

Just looking at Hitler, he had starting annexing countries by the mid 30's. But forgetting the stability of the world for the moment, we are talking about a very different US/foreign policy back then. We were still isolationists in spite of our role in WWI, and frankly had no interest in participating in a second European war nor play policeman to the world. WWII was Europe's problem until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor....a very stupid move on their part by the way.

That and the economic depression is why we were unprepared and had to get up to snuff very quickly. Compared to then, we now are armed and manned to the teeth. That's why I think anything beyond where we are is overkill.
