Hormel was at war with the Catholic Church over that church's teaching about homosexuality. He was publicly contemptuous of the Church and Catholics and participated in spectacles mocking Catholics and their beliefs. This insensitive behavior is not evidencing of someone with a diplomatic temperament especially one who wanted to be our representative to a Catholic country like Luxembourg.

Furthermore, Ashcroft wasn't the only one with that opinion as evidenced by the fact that Clinton had to sneak him in over congressional opposition when no one was watching.

Without hearing his side I would guess that Ashcroft did factor in Hormel's sexual preferences when voting for the ambassadorship.

Has Ashcroft responded to these charges?
The gist of his defense has been, You don't know my heart and I must have been misunderstood. He didn't convince me.
