From what I have heard about his programs in Texas, Bush quickly pushes forth his right wing agenda in the first part of his term. That way he still has a couple of years to fool the voters into thinking he is a moderate so he can get re-elected.

We are not likely to forget Bush's true agenda while staring at someone like Ashcroft.

I would expect Scalia is slithering with joy. Perhaps Bush is thinking of appointing Ashcroft to the SC!!!!!!

As someone who spent 3 years participating in a Pentacostal Church I am gravely mortified by the appointment of this man.It is the duty of all Pentacostals to follow the advice of their pastors. Ashcroft will do what his pastor tells him; or, according to his religion, he will burn in hell for eternity. We should all find out who his pastor is cause that's the guy who will really be interpreting the laws.........not Ashcroft.

"Odd, 90% of the people I know who voted against Clinton thought he was the Antichrist"

I didn't think he was the antichrist until he showed what he is capable of. By about the time Monica came along I was convinced. Didn't start out feeling that way about him, he had to earn it.

"my conservative friends still have trouble admitting that they each made more money in the last 8 years than any other period in their lives, and that Clinton may actually have had something to do with it"

I have done ok the last 8 years too. I think I earned it. For you I guess it is more comforting to think Clinton did it for you. People generally do earn more as time goes on with their career regardless of who is president btw. Give all the credit for your success to Clinton if you want. By your reasoning you wont be doing to well the next 8 years.

"(when he was himself willing to say, and do, anything, no matter how reprehensible, to win here)"

GWB handled himself with dignity imo. What specifically did GWB do that you find so offensive?

"Ashcroft was what the American people "elected" him to do??"

Aschroft was appointed, not elected. See Government 101 text book.

"the second he became Prez, the "compassionate" preface would drop off"

Why does an A.G. need to be compassionate? His job is to enforce the law. He is not a social worker. Will he or wont he do it (enforce the law)? You obviously feel he will not. I beleieve he will, so we will both have to watch and see who is right.

"ideological tactical opposition from the GOP is one that should now be thrown right back in their faces"

This opposition comes from the fact that most repubs are bothered by Clinton's lack of intergrity. Some of the things he did actually bother some people. The people like you (presumably) that approve of firing people for no reason (travelgate), selling missile technology to China, snooping in people's FBI files, using the Lincoln bedroom as a fundraiser, doinking interns in the whitehouse, etc., etc., etc. feel that people who disagree with that stuff are unreasonable. So be it. America is a free place and there is plenty of room for your line of thinking. But it doesn't belong in the whitehouse.

Anyway, I am happy with GWB and his appointments. The dems who voted against him (Ashcroft) did so because of their ideological differences, not because he is not qualified. That seems wrong to me and seems ok to you. Don't think we will get anywhere on this.

Good luck for the next 8 years. It sounds like you will need it without the aid of a democrat in office.
