The system will be used for Java application distribution services, for example, NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s i-Appli. DoCoMo started i-Appli service upon launch of its first Java-enabled mobile phone. The two companies are planning to provide a development environment for i-Appli around April 2001 , aiming to use the new system. The companies will make mobile phones as full-scale application terminals. The system will provide the application environment that allows a link between Java-based applications running on mobile phones and Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) components placed in servers. Moreover, the system is designed as to call EJB components and run Java applications on a mobile phone when needed. As a result, users can download only the applications they need. In addition, the developers will be able to utilize assets of EJB components developed for PCs to those for mobile phones. This is expected to improve efficiency in system development. The new system was built in combination of NTT Software's distributed object middleware, "Bluegrid," for mobile-Java and Fujitsu's application server. "Interstage Application Server." Java applications running on mobile phones and EJB components located on servers can be developed through the use of Fujitsu's integrated development environment, "Interstage Apworks."
