During the 70's great strides were made towards energy efficiency.

And do you know why? Because the oil was expensive. When it becomes expensive again (and it will) further strides towards energy efficiency will be made.

Nuclear is very clean, until it isn't.

Ok, there is problem with nuclear, coal, hydro, oil, etc. How do you suggest generating the Gigawatts of power that are needed?
