And do you know why? Because the oil was expensive. When it becomes expensive again (and it will) further strides towards energy efficiency will be made.

Yes.... I agree completely. Cost is a tremendous incentive to innovate. But Government can help things along. They should continue to raise the overall MPG requirements on new cars. Look what Govt. pressure did to clean up the pollution and improve the fuel economy of outboard engines. Between
electronic fuel injection or high pressure direct fuel injection on the two strokes and the emergence of high horsepower compact 4 strokes, outboard engines are FAR cleaner and economical than even 5 years ago. I suspect that in five years, all new outboards will be (by law) 4 stroke.
This is just a small example of what can be done.

Joe,

There was another reason why energy conservation was important in the 70's. Back then our society still remembered JFK's words "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country"

If a politician made a remark like that now, his career would be over. President Reagan taught us (in the terms of Ayn Rand) that the only true value is monetary self-interest.

Forget paying off the debt. We would rather have a tax cut. We wanna have our tax cut! Wanna, wanna, wanna. Forget the kids and the $5 trillion we owe. Gimme my tax cut!!!!!!

During the 70's great strides were made towards energy efficiency.

And do you know why? Because the oil was expensive. When it becomes expensive again (and it will) further strides towards energy efficiency will be made.

Joe,

Oh I see......once oil got cheap again, no one forsaw that it might get expensive again so any efficiency efforts could be blown off.
