Limtex, that's what is going on. <We claim that there are a whole bunch of us who have these patents and each piece, even the smallest piece of the IPR for W-CDMA is just as important as the biggest piece ( sort of communism for technology) so you have to share what there is sort of equally with even the smallest IPR holder.>

It also explains the great move to W-CDMA. If the W-CDMA crowd can persuade QUALCOMM that their patents are just one of many needed to make the most popular technology work and cdma2000 is dead, then they might be able to lean on QUALCOMM as being the dog in the manger. As Irwin has said many times, his greatest concern is a delay in 3G. If cdma2000 is dead [through alleged lack of interest from service providers] then Q! loses leverage and will be in a game of chicken with the everyone else who can stop W-CDMA just as much as Q! can.

That seems to be the game, though 5% is so low that it is not a show-stopper. GSM succeeded with 15% royalties and CDMA is many times better on capacity than TDMA systems so royalties could be even higher than GSM royalties and the technology would still take over.

We'll soon see as the pressure builds for service providers to provide 3G service.

I think the great popularity of W-CDMA is part of a big game of chicken and cdma2000 is NOT dead in the water. I say let's ditch W-CDMA and go with cdma2000. Nokia and Ericy claimed they didn't need QUALCOMM technology to do W-CDMA, so let them do it without Q! We'll find out in court who is right and who is wrong.

Anyone want to buy cdma2000? It's ready now and will be cheaper and better than W-CDMA. Or you can wait...for the great VW-40 from Nokia who have trouble producing 2G CDMA. They will surely indemnify you against litigation by QUALCOMM ... remember Texaco gave such a guarantee against litigation and nearly went broke after the courts found them guilty as charged.
