Tony,

Maybe the likes of TigerDirect, Everex and Accubyte will use them

Well, I respectfully disagree Tony. Those 2nd and 3rd tier vendors might be addressing an aspect of the market that Intel is not in. Ever thought about a sub $1000 server? The question might be, how big of a market will there be for inexpensive servers....

IMO, one of the challenges Intel faces is as AMD's fabs are able to produce more and more chips, it might cause uP prices to fall at a faster rate.....

Tony - re: "Point is, even if VIA does a chipset around AMD's "server effort", it doesn't mean the likes of Compaq, HP or IBM will touch it. Those guys want complete sever product lines up to 8-way and beyond. "

Excellent point.

The major OEMS - as you note - have 5 years of SUCCESSFUL experience with Intel's SMP chips and chip sets.

Of course, as you also note - the Tiger Directs may make a big "corporate thrust " with these "prayer SMP chips" from AMD and VIA.

Paul

Re: even if VIA does a chipset around AMD's [Intel's] "server effort", it doesn't mean the likes of Compaq, HP or IBM will touch it.

Is that a modified joint quote from SUN, DEC, and the AS400 division referring to Intel's attempt to market SHV servers?

Dan

Tony,

Good, frank article on VIA's opinion. Point is, even if VIA does a chipset around AMD's "server effort", it doesn't mean the likes of Compaq, HP or IBM will touch it. Those guys want complete sever product lines up to 8-way and beyond.

Why do they use Serverworks? They don't sell any processors, only chipsets.

Joe
