I do not believe in inherent human rights; it is pretty obvious that rights are not in fact inalienable, and that rights were not in fact granted by a creator, at least not one with any interest in sustaining them. I do believe that long-term utility is best served when societies assert and protect the broadest possible range of rights and freedoms, on their own initiative. Free societies with protected rights are more productive, and are more pleasant places to live.

We assert rights and freedoms for our own sakes and for our own purposes, not to please some abstract mythical construct.
