A slowing economy combined with an inability to get out new products and IBM selling comparable products at half price. The UltraSparc III was originally due in 1998, then they pushed it until Summer 2000. I remember posting in the spring of last year that if they didn't get that sucker out soon, IBM was going to start killing them with their new copper/SOI process. Right around that time it became pretty clear to me by way of rumor that they had major problems with the E10000 and that the USIII was going to be pushed until this year. The E10000 problem is huge (this is why ebay was crashing) and if you were a Sun customer, the only way they'd talk to you is if you signed a non-disclosure agreement. Needless to say this pissed a lot of its customers off. In the meantime, IBM executed reasonably well. There's a lag time involved in making multi-million dollar purchases, you just don't do it overnight. The lag caught up in December. While the economy was grinding to a halt, IBM was begging managers to do overtime building servers for $80 an hour, while working next to the line employees pulling in $10 an hour. Rumors I'm hearing now is that Sun is having major problems with the SMP boards and that USIII will be delayed even longer. Hence, they are releasing single processor workstations to put investors at ease. It's last resort for them, this makes absolutely no sense unless there is some type of integrity problem with the big servers. The pain could just be beginning with them. IBM is now fabbing for CPQ and HWP also. Sun is getting left behind. Given how much of an Asswipe Scott McNealy is, I think there's a lot of executives laughing their asses off inside of these 3 companies. [I know those in chip design are sure laughing. -ggg-] EDIT: My opinion may be a little biased, but I have been dead accurate about Sun for the last year [chip wise].
