The new company, Advanced LCD Technologies Development Center Co., Ltd. (ALTEDEC), was established in January 2001. Fumiaki Funada, division general manager of Sharp's LCD Laboratories, was installed as the president. "We aim to develop the common base of LCD technology of four or five years ahead, which is difficult to achieve if each company tries to develop it separately," said Funada. The six companies participating in the joint venture are Sharp, Toshiba Corp., NEC Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. The new company is capitalized at 50.4 million yen (114.90 yen = US$1), which was provided equally by the six companies. In the initial stage, it will start operations with about 50 employees sent from those six companies. The joint venture plans to spend about 10 billion yen for developing the new technology in the next four years. The development cost will be covered by the investment from the six companies, subsidies from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) that can be obtained when the fledgling company participates in a NEDO-sponsored competition and other event. The new firm has two major targets of technology development: The first one is the development of energy-saving production process, which will cut the energy consumption in the process of the TFT array production by half. The possible examples are the low-temperature processing technology and the energy-saving plasma processing technology. The other target is the development of state-of-the-art LCDs.
