Glowing Pixels and All / Pioneer Spirit

by Neil A. Martin, in BARRON'S March 5 issue, page 22

One of the hottest wireless phones on the market is Motorola's Timeport P8767, a sleek, silver handset that sports the most colorful and easy-to-read screen around. The phone, which sells for $250-$300, is the first to utilize a new display technology called organic electroluminescence. It won't be the last. "The display is the selling point," says Steve Lalla, director of product operations with Motorola's Personal Communications Sector. "The numbers and letters really leap out at you."

They're also developing a flexible, paper-thin display for applications such as wall-mountable displays and even electronic paper (doesn't say, but I assume OEL). Pioneer's market cap is 'only' 4.2 billion with the price at $23-1/2; revenues for the year ending March 31 are projected at 5.7 billion. I think I'll keep an eye on PIO - seems like a reasonable pick by Mr. Martin.

The new Timeport P8767 phone, another new wireless phone debuting from Motorola, offers users maximum display clarity with Tohoku Pioneer Corporation's patented Organic Electro-Luminescent technology. The green, red and blue text and icons appear on a black background, offering the user enhanced readability in most lighting conditions.

When Motorola says mini-browser, they're not kidding about the mini!
