Steve ... EMC just moved some value from the right pocket to the left pocket.

Total number of shares of McDATA Class A common stock to be distributed = 81,000,000 / 2,200,674,237 = .0368069 Total number of shares of EMC common stock outstanding as of 5:00 p.m., eastern time, on January 24, 2001, the record date </TABLE>

You can expect EMC stock to adjust to the give away and MCDTA to trade as a value based on their own business model. This need time to settle out on the market. Some will be selling MCDTA just to clear small amounts out of their accounts, others will be accumulating this new offering like an IPO. Personally I will keep my 8 free shares.

EMC recently spun off McData, a supplier of fiber optic switches and directories, which are key and integral to building SANs. I think one of the reasons was so that McData could sell more easily to EMC's competitors like IBM, Compaq, HP, Sun, etc. Other reasons? The shares of EMC are being distributed right now to EMC shareholders. I don't know why that would make EMC go down except that, nowadays, any news can wake up people to sell your stock. In retrospect, looking at all the news that's out now, it looks like the NTAP/EMC weak January rumor, which I hope EMC speaks to, plus people being nervous about NTAP's earnings report today, is the reason for EMC weakness today.

I think the amount of MCDT dist. = 4% of EMC. So EMC, theoretically could drop 4%. But EMC has dropepd from 80+ last week to 60+ today. So very little can be attributed to MCDT distribution.
