OK, so you are familiar with the road. Is it possible to pull off onto a shoulder or a pulloff zone or is that dangerous? When I was in Oregon last year there were a lot of pulloff zones in the mountains, just a hundred feet or so long and a couple dozen feet wide with good barricades along the edge. I've seen similar things in the mountains in Virginia and Pennsylvania, but not so many as Oregon. If not, the highway department should make some to alleviate the problem.
