Yea, I remember when a layoff really WAS a layoff! I grew up in Michigan (big union state), and my grandfather was laid-off from Ford for months. He puttered around the house for a few months collecting unemployment and union benefits until he was called-back. I think he had something like 15 years in at Ford.

Ah, for the great Jap.... er American system of the past! :)

BTW, some states (California) has a law regarding "mass layoffs". Any time "n" employees are fired, let go, whatever you want to call it, at one time, it's classified as a "mass layoff". In California, I beleive that they are required to give 2 months severace pay.
