What do you think stood in the way of these heroic achievements? This ought to be good. Freshen up that drink before you answer.

Whether the American epic achievement would have been in art, or science, or world conquest I don't know. We will never know.

So if I follow what I think you are saying, you believe that George Bush's tax cuts will be enacted and as a result our debt will continue to grow or at least not go down. On the other hand if the tax cuts are not enacted, we will pay off the national debt.
While I follow your logic, Tiger, I do not believe opportunity has been squandered. I share your concerns about continued deficit spending, but I believe the answer is fiscal responsibility, not higher taxes. If I remember the 80's, tax revenues after Reagan's tax cuts grew substantially, but unfortunately expenditures grew even faster.
While I understand your dislike of George Bush, Al Gore
never did strike me as a person to "... achieve on a truly monumental scale". However, I was prepared to give him a chance if he was inaugurated president. It would be big of you to extend the same to Mr. Bush.
