Merger is a pooling of interest. But in matrix management run companies, the scale factor is very big in achieving efficiency. Matrix management can handling tremendous overload of workload. Subsidiaries probably will not be slashed too much. Some small subsidiaries probably will be sold to their management, which is Mr. Welch's style of management.

While I am not recommending you to look for an entry point here; I am happy that you are looking at one of the largest corporation and how business is run there.
