I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley (aka "the Valley"), and I seem to remember that we just called the bugs "roaches" and never "palmetto bugs" as in Florida. At our family gathering, the mention of a roach always sparks my mother into telling her roach story of 40 years ago when she overheard an exchange in the local women's clothing store. A customer had returned a new dress because of a spot on it, and the lady owner, who always carried herself with an uppity royal air, told the customer that the spot appeared to be the result of having been visited upon by a roach. The customer said she had no roaches in her home, to which the owner replied, "Dear, even I-I-I have roaches." We've heard our mother mimic that line a hundred times and it's always funny and we laugh again.
