Thomas White had a wonderful story about the giant roaches he encountered while at Baylor. It was a combination of the roach version of Arachnophobia and Animal House. If memory serves, it involved scary scratching noises, followed by chemicals sprayed into a cabinet and a raging torrent of roaches trying to escape the bathroom. Also two big college boys with their backs holding the bathroom door shut, terrified that if they faltered, only their bones would be found the next morning.
Texas holds the title for largest, most prolific, and most resistant roaches in the world.
When Dan clerked here one summer during his law school years, we lived in an SMU fraternity house. We shared the kitchen with these enormous roaches. Really- shared it. I would walk in at night, turn the lights on, and they would stare at me like- we're using the kitchen right now, come back later--and I would quickly turn off the lights and leave. I knew when I was beaten.
I didn't know they were roaches; I thought they were some bizarre mutant rat.

My mother-in-law lived in the Valley for a year. When she moved back she stayed with us for a couple of weeks and stored her things in our basement. Next thing I knew our house was crawling with Texas roaches. Boric Acid killed them off but I had never seen an infestation like that.

I thought they were called Valley Butterflies.
