The Mexican Revolution of 1910? And I dreamed, as a kid, of disappearing into Big Bend on a horse, with a dog trotting along side. Still haven't been there.

What a charming name for such horrible critters...
But watch yourself here, C2; lots of Texans inhabit this thread and might take offense at your disparagement of the great eatin' places in our fair state. Many's the bowl of 5-Alarm Texas red I've enjoyed at Frank Tolbert's Chili Parlor and there is nothing more fun than a chili cookoff- just reading the names of the cooks' creations can take your mind off your numb taste buds. Gastronomic Poetry....

Valley Butterflies ... Actually, I've seen a few flying roaches. The Royal Roach Air Force, maybe? Fortunately the flight-ready of the species seem to be limited to a select few. But no way they'll win any beauty contests with butterflies.

I've been to Big Bend twice, both times in the month of October, a pleasant time of year there. Lots of interesting photo-ops, particularly in early morning and late afternoon. The Lost Mine Trail is a relatively easy and short hike (3 miles or so) that has a rather spectacular view (for Texas, at least) awaiting at its summit. A friend said she did the hike alone late in the afternoon and was treated to the sound of rattlesnakes on the return hike at dusk.
