Thanks ISh, I have now passed on more congrats. He is beginning to strut and preen. I'd better stop. Or make him pick up his room and do his homework. ENough of the star mentality.
As you know, it's a grueling sport and it's year round. And an oddly lonely one when you think that most of the hours are spent doing mile after mile of laps. The pool where they work out has speakers underwater; I don't know if that helps or not.
And then it takes guts to wear a speedo at first, and a cap, and to shave your body all over. Football players sneer at them. Non-swimmers haven't a clue about the intensity or the speed or the discipline. If you say you swim a 50 in 22+, they shrug and say, so? Swimmers tend to have a lot of respect for their bodies-- more than football and baseball, I think- maybe because any letdown can add seconds and make all the difference in a race, so there is no drinking or drugs at all.
EVery year a few kids who think they are good swimmers try out for a few days: they get up at 5 am, jump into freezing water, throw up a few times, and quit.
So this is nice. Their team won their Regional over 12 other teams. The men's team had 175 points, next highest score was 35. They're VERY strong as a team-- lot of depth.
And a bunch of really wonderful kids. We have been so fortunate with the friends our boys have found.
