if i get your point correctly, you're saying that malicious code, if it strikes, is only going to take out software, files and the like, and will not physically cause damage to any hardware in your system. that right?

Mark

No,what I'm saying is that if the worst that happens is I lose software and there is no hardware damage then I can live with that.

If I were to lose hardware then I would more than likely change my stance on anti-virus software.

I think I'll do more research on the virus situation and see what the latest thinking is.

Software damage to hardware ...

As commonly thought, software cannot harm hardware. But an exception to this rule could be in setting some registers on the video card to damage the monitor. I haven't been motivated enough to examine this in detail because I don't write routines altering these settings, but I am aware of the possibility of harm and tread in this area as lightly as possible. I view the probability of recalcitrant code causing this harm accidentally as being quite remote, although computer vandals could find this area fertile.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. I also don't use AV software.

P.P.S. Some time ago, there was a computer prank that sent the message "I Love You" to every address on your system. Since I love everyone in my address list, I didn't share the fear.
