I suppose we could send men back to the moon if our only goals was to get a few there and the program was well managed but I don't see much point in the attempt

I can think of nothing which stimulated me as a child more than the moon missions. It is very hard to explain to my children why we used to be able to go to the moon, but can't do it anymore. It is now 2001, and space travel has taken a big step back from when the movie was made.

Do you remember the excitement of watching a manned moon mission launch?

Nah, forget it. Let's spend the money building some useless missile defense system to provide psychological comfort for the paranoid.
