Bush used the California electricity shortage as an excuse to push drilling in the ANWR.

That is either stupid or corrupt, given that there is no correlation between petroleum production and electricity in California.

Jimmy Carter pushed the development of oil shale in Colorado. I had the pleasure of working on that project, which would have destroyed most of western Colorado, and contaminated most of the groundwater in Western Colorado and Eastern Utah.

We discovered that extracting the oil in a relatively clean fashion would require more energy than the oil would produce. What a shame.
