I bought new switches for my Key Tronic KB101 keyboard, I am going to rebuild one of them. I took it apart, and it's not going to be an easy job. I figure 4 hours..at least.

The reason I am rebuilding it, is that it's worth about 150 bucks and they don't make them anymore.

The manufacturer still rebuilds these boards for people who want them refurbished, but they charge 90 dollars, plus shipping both ways.

If that was just a plain Jane keyboard, it's cheaper and less hassle just to buy a new one. That goes for Notebooks as well.

Cleaning key switches is not very practical.

Keyboard cleaning -

The advice from the about.com site sounds OK, but Wingdingo says use soapy water, that sounds like a sure way to ruin a keyboard, even more disasterous on a laptop!

My experience is that even a little moisture can be death to a keyboard.

from the link:

Tips:
If you can't see metal contacts because they are covered with rubber or plastic, you can't clean the contacts easily and should not try to do so.
If the keys still won't work properly after cleaning out the keyboard, it will probably need to be replaced.

my laptop has the plastic coating over the contacts

how do you replace a laptop keyboard?
