If using oil allows us to enjoy a prosperous growing economy with increasing developed technology then eventually the money and the technology (combined with the growing scarcity of oil) will make it practical to use new sources of energy. I can think of other examples where drawing down scarce resources makes sense but this is the
most relevant to the current discussion.

Tim,

Many people are assuming that there will a replacement by the time we run out of oil. You and everyone else may be right, but good planning dictates that you use a finite resource such as oil as if there is no replacement and there never will be.
