Eddie had to work with a great entertainer and showman, but this person was very limited in his range. Also Eddie wanted to be true to his stage performance, so he avoided overdubs for most of the early albums. Listen to side one of the fourth album called "Fair Warning". He was an angry guy then. Eddie has lost something in his later years, but those first six albums were nothing short of amazing. Every guitar player since will have to do time in Eddie's woodshop at some point in their development. Ever hear the into to "Little Guitars"? My grandmother really liked that one, as well as "Spanish Fly". All Detroiters know the story about the time Ted Nugent went on stage during a soundcheck to find out what was "magic" about Eddie's guitar. Ted was a disappointed dude that day. Do you like Satriani or Michael Hedges? They are two of my favorites. Hedges is another one who died way before his time. I saw Hedges only one time. I watched 9 other acts in a folk festival before he took the stage. It is now in my top five live performances ever. I remember this country guy sitting next to us saying, "where is the rest of the band?" and "are they backstage?" and "he has one of the those tape machines playing the backup". His version of Dylan's "Watchtower" is my favorite. And the funny part, Hedges was filed under "New Age" in the music store, lol. Get your Napster and get it soon -g- HAGO TH Oh I forgot one thing. I think of Eddie just like I think of Tiger or Jordan or anyone who took it well beyond the next level. Had Mozart lived today he would be fronting a band somewhere and writing pop tunes. Had Eddie lived in Mozarts day, then today he would have a bin in the Classical section. Kids at Interlocken would learn Van Halen right along with Bach and the like. There is no difference with that level of ability, but rather a balance between finding the right format for the time you are in.
