I think it is a bit much to expect people to do national service for nothing. It should be able to be motivated by enlightened self-interest. This is one of the legitimate roles of government: doing things that as individuals we have the desire for, but an inability to do by the limits of our resources.

As for the GI Bill, that went the way of the dodo. I was able to stretch mine out for 5 years by going to school for 9 months per year and working summers.

This kind of national service program couldn't be that expensive if you consider the foreign policy benefits that indirectly arise from such service. Even the military wasn't too bad for me, but I'd prefer another option as well. It gave me a chance to form my own identity (ironicly) and develop a vision for myself that was separate from that of my parents. All in all, it was a good bet for me.
