I was banned for reasons which Poet still hasn't explained, but seem to me partly if not primarily to have to do with the fact that I'm male. What's interesting is that there was no sense of justice or fair play -- no notice or opportunity to be heard, no explanation. I wasn't even told I had been banned; had to find out from SI when my postings got screwed up. It is said that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Poet has absolute power, and uses it. But she is totally unable to see the disconnect between her abuse of power in this practical setting and her professed liberal principles. A process of punishment without hearing or notice which she would, I presume, condemn in China or other repressive countries she has no hesitancy exerting herself. There seems to be no sense that a liberal thread should be governed according to liberal principles. As an activist in the social rights movement years -- decades, now -- ago, I saw clearly the resistance of those who had and abused power to recognize the legitimate concerns of the oppressed. I spent a lot of hours sitting in restaurants whose owners were outraged that we would object to their exercise of exclusion. "It's my restaurant, I'll run it the way I want to, and if I want to exclude niggers, that's my business I don't need any Yankee nigger-lovers telling ME who I have to let eat in my restaurant." I expected that response then. I am astonished, though, to find Poet following the same principle in this day and age in a supposed forum for liberal principles. There is still a lot of work to do for those of us who believe in social justice.
