"Marginal tax rates of 40% are obscene (imho). I have heard many here advocate flat or lower tax rates. (Very few of zero). What is fair?"

Your post raises some interesting questions. It is quite possible for someone in the maximum tax bracket in a high tax state, to pay over 50% of income in taxes. Is there any limit on how much the government should be allowed to take in taxes from any one person. Could the government take 80% of a person's income, 0r 90% or given the fact that we can be taxed at the Federal Level, the State Level and the Municipal Level, at 110%.

Another question if a country were to refuse to allow you to criticize its leaders, but had a tax rate of 10%, would people in that country be more or less free than a country which permitted you to criticize its leaders, but took 90% of income?
