They were unusual in that they promoted bhakti yoga, the yoga of devotion, in this case to the person of Krishna. Other movements out of India into this country were somewhat "secular", but they were resolutely tied to the Hindu tradition. That had a lot to do with the limits of conversion they experienced. How many people want to live in an ashram, shave their heads funny, and chant "Hare Krishna!" all the time. Heck, they may as well go to the Stations of the Cross on Friday nights.......
