Yes in many ways they were like the evangelical yogis. Most forms of yoga have a concept of the void and a non personal soul/deity with the goal of Samdhi being the cessation of personal existence and a merging with the void. Their concept was similar to the Christian concept of a personal relationship with God except that the relationship was not of God as an old wish provider but as a conjugal lover or friend.

As a general rule, prselytization is an alien concept in Hinduism. ISKCON is probably the only sect (shunned by many mainstream Hindu's I believe) that has resorted to such acts.
