Btw Chas... one more downside to the JTF is that it only has one engine. The navy is loath to use aircraft without two engines because they fly over water. This puts their pilots at far more risk should they have to "punch out".

The F-18 was a "heavy-duty version of the F-5 (? I think)

I think the more powerful and modern F-5 was the F-20 which was developed but never bought by the air force or navy.
