Telekom Austria orders additional 100.000 ADSL lines for broadband network expansion

Paris, February 14, 2001 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), today announced
that it has been selected by Telekom Austria to deliver an additional 100,000 Asymmetric
Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) lines for the rapid expansion of its broadband network
within the first half of 2001. Alcatel's solution is based on its multiservice 7300 ASAM DSL
access platform, combining the highest port density currently available on the market with a
future-proof system architecture that will allow migration to additional services such as
symmetric (G.SHDSL), very high bit rate (VDSL) DSL and voice over DSL.

Telekom Austria selected Alcatel as its DSL provider in November 1999, when it began to
rapidly expand the coverage of its broadband network. Telekom Austria's branded service,
"A-Online Speed," offers a wide range of ADSL services for residential and business
customers. Telekom Austria is using Alcatel's Speed Touch USBTM modem to provide
cost-efficient installation for its "A-Online Speed SI" service. Telekom Austria already uses
the Alcatel Speed Touch HomeTM modem for the residential customer, and the Speed
Touch ProTM modem for comprehensive business services.

Marc Hermans, president of Alcatel's DSL Customer Premises activities, said : "Of the
100.000 lines ordered, 50.000 will be deployed with Alcatel's Speed Touch USBTM modem,
which has distinguished itself with its simplicity in connecting to the internet via ADSL,
making it ideal for laptops and PCs."

Rudolf Fischer, Chief Technology Officer of Telekom Austria, said : "This new high-density
xDSL-platform will definitely allow Telekom Austria to accelerate the pace of deployment of
its broadband services. Together with the next generation USB ADSL-modem, we can
meet residential mass market demand for high speed internet access with a low cost,
plug-and-play self installation solution."

Willem Verbiest, vice president of Alcatel's DSL Infrastructure activities, said : "We are
pleased to have been selected once again by Telekom Austria for the expansion and
mass-marketing of their broadband network. With Alcatel's 7300 ASAM, existing
infrastructure can be easily migrated towards a multiservice platform. Multiservice offers
not only further cost-optimized ADSL, but also voice over DSL, symmetrical G.SHDSL and
VDSL in the future, provisioned by end-to-end network and service management and
generating new revenue streams for Telekom Austria while at the same time reducing its
capital and operational expenses."
