Only the "little" millionaires pay estate taxes, the Gates', Soros' and Buffets' of the world, yes the rarified few, have their trusts and foundations and oh gee, maybe estate tax elimination will dry up "contributions" to their monuments....

I knew Ben and Jerry were socialists but it is with some distress I will now have to consign all the others to the same list of "nuts" that includes Hollywood celebs such as Barb, Alex, Martin, Altman and Cher. It is a dark moment.

You are poor or unemployed and socialism seems like "the right thing" or the "necessary" thing and you are grateful.

Then you find work, improve your life and maybe even discover your talent and dabble in capitalism.

Soon you're soaring and annoyed that the only thing holding you back from your wildest dreams are taxes paid to a government for projects of social engineering if not outright fraud and waste.

Nevertheless you become filthy rich, well filthy anyway, and ashamed of accumulating such lucre and are determined to right this situation by requiring the fellow rich to follow your example.

I'm having this awful dream of a bunch of old rich guys frolicking in the grove, naked, and frankly I'm not at all tempted to join them......even if I could.

I agree, they are all welcome to give their fortunes to the government, I'm sure they could fund every social program out there.

KLP: The estate tax is just one component of the tax overhaul, which will take months and months to wind its way through Congress. Just today two Repub senators ... from Vermont and Connecticut ... said they couldn't support Bush's tax plan in its present form. (Can the gal GOP senators from Maine be far behind? I think not.)

On one hand we have Dubya's tax plan, which is to give new Lexus cars to all the rich fat cats and zilch to the Norma Raes of the world ... the single mom with two children making 20 grand a year. On the other hand we have the excellent proposal from the AFL-CIO leadership to give every person in the country a $400 "prosperity bonus." The end result will likely occur in the middle. (And for the record, I am in full support of eliminating the marriage tax penalty.)
