meat - I think the layoffs themselves were probably a good thing - and the additional changes to the rating process will let the system select out weak players no matter how long they have been around, which is a good way to maintain morale while reducing headcount, since it is performance based.

But they could have simply said nothing, rather than issue a statement which was widely read as a denial.

I actually think that this management team is so unused to dealing with anything but success that they just don't know how to manage expectations. But it hardly matters, the result is reduced credibility.

Does anyone have a handle on the performance of the Other investments?

Investments ('000,000)
2,418 Feb 2, 2001, down 728 from 3,146 Oct 27, 2000

What was sold, what was market depreciation?

Stockholders' equity is down 375 m, they bought back 22 m shares for an unstated amount, but possibly more than 440 m.

Options exercises probably brought in money at recent levels, I'll guess $100 m. Net income was 508.

My first guess is that they lost $483 m to $543 m in their investments. So roughly, of the they spent all the earnings on the stock buyback, and also lost that amount in Other investments. That is a good reminder. Some of this is a reduction in unrealized gain in some of the vc placements, like LNTE.

Meat, your reply to rudedog concerning the layoffs and the security was interesting. At first I agreed with you, but then I reversed. Security was blown with the rumors. The amount of information that has left Dell in the days since the rumor was started is probably staggering. Who put out the rumor? If management put out the info quietly among the divisions, then okay, case closed, but they should not be deluded into thinking that they've kept everything sacrosanct. The reverse is likely true. But if the rumor was not an authorized disemination of info, then Dell needs to find those ppl and get rid of them. The human element here is entirely different, but I'm not looking at that.
