Hackers attack U.S. tech giants

SINGAPORE (CBS.MW) - Several U.S. high-technology companies including Compaq Computer, Hewlett-Packard, Gateway and Intel were the victims of recent hacking attacks by a group calling itself Sm0ked Crew, company officials and media reports said Friday.

"We can confirm that one of our sites belonging to the European business unit has been defaced," a Singapore-based PR spokeswomen for Compaq (CPQ: news, msgs) said.

The computer giant alerted authorities once it discovered Thursday that its Scottish site had been defaced. "It's a minor site in Scotland," she said. "All of our other major sites are running and in good condition."

Compaq said it didn't know who the culprits were, but CNET News reported that a group calling itself Sm0ked Crew was behind the attack as well as several others targeting Hewlett-Packard (HWP: news, msgs), Gateway (GTW: news, msgs), Intel (INTC: news, msgs), Alta Vista (CMGI: news, msgs) and Disney's (DIS: news, msgs) Go.com.

Details of the hacking incidents came from Attrition.org, an independent organization that records these kind of attacks. Attrition said hackers had defaced HP's e-learning site, an Alta Vista shopping site and an Intel server which provides Web access to product support documents.

The hacked sites on HP and Compaq contained the following message: "Admin, You just got Sm0ked. This site was hacked by Sm0ked crew. Hacked by splurge and The-Rev. Greetz dislexik, nouse, system33r, italguy, B_Real and anyone I forgot, sm0kedcrew@hushmail.com."

It was not known the extent of damage done to Gateway or Go.com.

Company officials from Hewlett-Packard, Gateway, Intel, Alta Vista and Disney could not be immediately reached for comment.
