OT to Bill,

One minor point. Capacity utilization was barely over 80% or much closer to the bottom of the range for the past decade than the top. Without being specific to any one company, there is excess capacity; and with the lack of consumer confidence, there is insufficient demand.

The unexplained fly in the ointment is the steadily increasing rate for new housing starts. This, IMO, is completely inconsistent with a recession, or a lack of confidence, or even a slowing growth rate.

While I reiterate that no one knows how long this slowdown will last, I'm in the camp that it's unlikely to be very long.

Have a good week end,
Ian

important silver lining: u.s. inventories have barely risen - showing that industry is in good control, probably due to high tech. yes, we are in recession, but it won't be long - say most of this year. i just bought a good chunk - for me - of nt at 19.99. so i'm already up a penny.
