Nice exchange over on the BK thread heinz. I have had similar conversations with folks lately (albeit my conversation partners were a tad less pig-headed than BGR). Their final argument after all others are exhausted is that over time markets go up. Well duh! In the widest timeframe they go up but 10 years is a good chunk of one's investing life you can't afford to be underperforming for ten years.

Similarly, I have been reading stuff lately calling for a "Super Duper" bear cycle which will actually extend for much more than 10 years and retrace much of the advance from 1932. I do not subscribe to that but don't rule anything out entirely. Frankly, if that's the case, we would have way more to worry about than the stock market.
