Kenneth,

Regardless what most of these "so-called" optical analysts say, I'm still betting on Nortel for the long run. Short term, it's in the hands of the big funds to rape as we've seen today and before.

I don't know the full extend of the cause for NT's announcement other than what I've heard from NT's press releases. I may be naive to believe a company that has the technology and delivered successfully for the past many qtrs, but I'm not stupid to believe all the crap being spewed by reporters and analysts who say they know the future better than anyone else.

Where I work, customers can cancel million dollar projects at a moment's notice. It just so happened recently that a big customer decided to write off 500K already invested rather than spend another one million to complete the job. The reality is that many companies are reassessing their spending now at the beginning of the year given the economic hurdles ahead. They don't want to come out short on their earnings either. It's not hard to believe, at least in part, that NT really was given some revised spending numbers by some of their customers. They're looking out for number one first and not NT's interest first. It's expected. Time may tell what really has happened. If NT is to believed, then many others including Ciena will be getting some interesting and shocking calls from their customers and soon.
