Necon--yeah, i guess it just depends on how you look at it--a legitimate argument can be made either way, I think. Interesting that you worked on McGovern's campaign--so did I, taking off from school to work in the general election in Iowa (got paid $25 a week!). I still talk to McGovern occasionally--my job brings me into contact with him; he's a great guy, still sharp as hell. Bush just reappointed him to his position in Rome (which I thought was a very nice gesture on Dubya's part) doing something as the U.S. rep. to the U.N. for food distribution, or something like that.

Interestingly, McGovern and Humphrey used to be friends--they lived next to each other in DC, and both come from the same state (S.D.). I'm not sure that McGovern every completely forgave Humphrey for the way he conducted himself in the 72 campaign, though (altho I'm not sure he didn't, either).

I read McGovern's biography. I worked on his campaign, in a local campaign office, when in high school......

I don't know how we would fine tune such a dispute. Humphrey didn't change much, as far as I can see, but I do not have a lot of details to back it up. The only thing I can see that you have to show he moved to the right is that he didn't much like McGovern, though......
