My disk defragmentation sensor on Norton System Works (Professional Edition 2001) shows 75%. I've never seen that red number below 95% until yesterday. Most of yesterday was occupied with what proved to be an unsuccess attempt to convert to cable service. (Optimum Online is coming tomorrow to see why what appears to have been a successful installation isn't providing the cable connection, and in the meantime I"m back with my isp.)

Anyway, the problem is that I'm unable to defrag. Either with Windows, or NSW.

Either of them just goes for hours. With NSW, the window says at the top "Speed Disk Drive C Optimizing folders 0% complete".... then various percentages increasing to 100% are shown, with the blue blocks adding up at the bottom from none to a full bar, and the "sorting" message. But it just goes on and on for hours.

Last night after failing with Windows to defrag, I tried again with NSW and this morning there was an Error msg, saying that I could either Ctrl alt del or touch any key to go back to windows. I did the latter, and was in the defrag process again. Gave it another hour and a half, but... it's infinite, and useless.

I'm wondering if anyone has a thought that might be helpful.

I did run Windoctor and it said there are no problems on Drive C.

Needless to point out, I'm pretty computer illiterate. I do know not to use drive E to hold a cup of coffee, though.
