E , you have a program that is writing to your hard drive. That is causing the process to continually restart. A great way to do this is a program called ENDITALL. Everyone swears by it.

hi e

i think your defragging will proceed okay if you shut down some background applications before trying again. the biggest offender seems to be norton antivirus.

using ctrl+alt+delete, look for a program that looks like navapw32, or if not exactly, something with nav(norton antivirus) in the name. highlight that app and click 'end task'.

then try running speed disk again.

[edit: if this does not do it for you, follow the same ctrl+alt+delete steps to shut down every background application except symtray and explorer. leave just those two running and you should be fine. remember to hit 'end task' and not 'shut down', or you'll shut down your pc.]

:)

Endless defragging...

The other suggestions are valid. Try not to have anything running while defrag is working.

Other suggestions ...

Empty your browser cache. Go one better and run Norton's Space Wizard. No point in defragging garbage.

In Norton's Defrag (Speed Disk) click Properties button and select Options... Go through the choices and pick the most simple defrag. Once you get the thing to work, you can get fancy later.

Also, if things Hang while data is moving, use the Legend option to determine which file(s) bring the trouble. Check that they're OK.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, PW.
