PMSW, RE: I chose to look at earnings per share as what I'd get if I owned the entire company. For CSCO this is $0.18 this quarter.

On the contrary, if you owned the entire company, you would have gotten 12¢ per share, not 18¢ per share.

Those extraordinary charges that happen every quarter are very real, and if you owned the company, all the acquired R&D would have a real cost.

PW - overdue response... particularly wanted to acknowledge yours is a mature and well thought out perspective.

While our investment philosophies are divergent on some points, there is common ground. Like the view that at a PE of 20 or so CSCO was a good investment. Like the view that the appreciation rates of '99 were not sustainable.

With respect to your choice of thread name and thread decorum I will not even attempt to explore differences! <just kidding>. I do find it amusing that neither of us are buying at this time, and neither are selling... but for completely different reasons.
