Hi Stephen - while I may unwind my position b/c of my personal circumstance, I do not agree entirely with the argument [even though it is a valid one from the value perspective.] NT was selling slow growth asset to fuel the high growth business. The value folks are growth blind, i.e., an asset is an asset is an asset. However, hanging on to the plants and factories in the slow growth segments is not the best use of asset. I should qualify, GAAP [growth at any cost] is equally problematic. NT is making a transition, so, a few Qs of skewing data is quite acceptable until it becomes a truly GARP company. Interestingly, the value folks are the ones buying the LUs and the XRXs of the world, are they going any better?

best, Bosco

Nortel's Roth has just finished his speech to the Canadian Club in Calgary (that's Calgary, Alberta, Canada to those in the US who know nothing about their neighbour to the north).

Roth likened his performance to that of Greenspan, who didn't see the US slowdown coming as late as Nov 15th last year. Greenspan went from raisng rates to lowering rates dramatically in the space of a few weeks.

Roth said that NT will emerge from the current situation a stronger company. He said that no one is better positioned, and that he has largely met his objectives set this time last year.

The questions is: do we believe him.
