RE:WMT>Wal-Mart 4th-Qtr Net Rises 4.5%, Worst Gain in 5 Yrs

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 4.5 percent, the smallest gain in almost five years, as the slowing economy and a disappointing holiday season curbed sales and profit.

``Although it was a good year, it was a year that was not quite up to our high Wal-Mart expectations,'' Scott said on a conference call. ``Fortunately, we do not see any indication that spending will slow further from its current levels.''

Still, he said, comparisons in the first half of the year will be ``difficult'' for the Bentonville, Arkansas-based chain.

For now, cash is king for most investors...
