Yes. You are right. The holders of 10% of the paper coconut promises are screwed. But this is to be, regardless, so might as well get some warmth and entertainment from it.

As to allowing a cave to collapse, might that take out the coconut groves planted above them - further reducing the real coconut production and deepening the disparity?

Perhaps it is feared that the walls between caves are so thin that the collapse of one cave could bring down the whole network with which the island is honeycombed. Thus impairing coconut production to a great extent.

If on that island, one might be looking to live only near recently backfilled caves. With a good supply of coconuts directly on hand.
