mingfatsai: Thanks for the clarification, and you could be right. I do believe you will be right for the next 2 mos, as I believe the real and best bottom will be in March/early April, but I don't think we will have that '94 scenario past that timeframe.

Remember that it depends on what you define as the "earnings picture clears up" as the media and analysts are trend followers and rationalize it, so when the market enters the uptrend, they will say the earnings picture is clearer from whatever sources they want to use (such as rate cuts or some famous guru saying so) when actually the monetary and technical factors will be more important.

I guess what I am saying is that it is virtually impossible to say when the earnings picture clears up or when the economy is picking up, in advance of it, but the market anticipates other events by about 6 mos, so I will let the market tell me what it is doing and not worry too much about speculating about why, other than that it is fun to try and human nature to try to understand things in a simplified manner (hence the need for astrology)...
